New Delhi: Vice Admiral R. Hari Kumar, who has commanded the now decommissioned aircraft carrier INS Viraat, will take over as the next Chief of Naval Staff on Nov. 30, when the incumbent Admiral Karambir Singh retires from service.

The announcement on the appointment of Vice Admiral Hari Kumar as the next Indian Navy chief was made late tonight in a statement from the Ministry of Defence.

Vice Admiral Kumar currently serves as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Mumbai-headquartered Western Naval Command.

Born on Apr. 12, 1962, the year India fought a bloody war with China, Vice Admiral Hari Kumar was commissioned on Jan. 1, 1983 in to the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy.

During his long and distinguished service spanning nearly 39 years, he has served in a variety of command, staff and instructional appointments.

Vice Admiral Hari Kumar’s sea command includes INS Nishank, missile corvette INS Kora and guided missile destroyer INS Ranvir. He has also served as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet.

Before taking over as FOC-in-C Western Naval Command, he was Chief of The Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee.

Vice Admiral Hari Kumar has undergone courses at the Naval War College, US, Army War College, Mhow and Royal College of Defence Studies, UK. He has been decorated with the Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM), the Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM), Vishist Seva Medal (VSM) and Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the President of India.
