A top Maoist leader, who was carrying Rs 4 lakh reward on his head and involved in many offences, surrendered before the police in Balangir district on Sunday. He was identified as Aitu Korsa (23), an area committee member (ACM) in CPI (Maoist).
Korsa, who surrendered before the northern range DIG Deepak Kumar and Balangir SP Nitin Kusalkar, was allegedly involved in seven major offensives against the security forces in Odisha. Korsa was wanted in the alleged killing of a civilian under Phiringia police area in Kandhamal district in 2019. He was also involved in the burning of a vehicle during 2019 elections in Kandhamal and engineered an IED blast in Khamankhol area in 2020.
He was allegedly part of two separate firing incidents in Kodanga area under Phiringia police station in Kandhamal district in April and July this year. Police said though Korsa belonged to Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, he was active in Maoist related operations in Odisha.
“The main reasons for his surrender were the frequent appeals by the state government and police, misconduct by senior leaders on regional lines between Telugu
and other cadres and developmental works of the government. He was also disillusioned with the party leaders after realizing that they are doing nothing for the development of tribal people,” DIG Deepak Kumar said.
SP Kusalkar said Korsa had joined the CPI (Maoist) as a party member in 2012 when he was a minor. In 2013, Korsa was transferred to Sunabeda
division. In 2016, he was transferred to the Kandhamal- Kalahandi- Boudh- Nayagarh division and worked under the leadership of Dasru. He was promoted to the rank of ACM in 2018.
