India Accelerates Indigenous Fighter Jet Production with Advanced Tejas Mk-1A

India is making significant strides in bolstering its defence manufacturing capabilities by producing the Tejas Mk-1A, an upgraded variant of its Indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). Designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Tejas Mk-1A incorporates over 40 enhancements to its predecessor, the Tejas Mk-1.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has ordered 83 Tejas Mk-1A aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to commence mid-2025. HAL aims to ramp up production to deliver 16-24 aircraft annually by 2026.

Key advancements in the Tejas Mk-1A include:

  • Advanced Avionics: Integration of the EL/M-2052 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and the indigenous Uttam AESA radar enhance detection and tracking capabilities.
  • Enhanced Weaponry: Compatibility with a comprehensive weapons package, including the Astra Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile, Derby BVR, R-73, and Python-5 air-to-air missiles and guided and unguided munitions.
  • Electronic Warfare Suite: Incorporation of the Unified Electronic Warfare Suite (UEWS) and an externally mounted self-protection jammer for improved survivability.
  • In-Flight Refueling and Onboard Oxygen Generation: Features like in-flight refueling capability and an Onboard Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS) developed by the Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) extend operational endurance.

Despite challenges, including delays in engine deliveries from General Electric, HAL is committed to expediting production. The company has pledged to commence aircraft rollouts upon receipt of the necessary engines, addressing concerns over delivery timelines.

The Tejas Mk-1A program signifies a pivotal milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing, reducing dependence on foreign equipment and showcasing the nation’s capability to design and produce advanced fighter jets.
