Indian Armed Forces likely to be re-organized with Four Theatre Commands
As per the report from government sources, Four theatre commands are about to be headed under Integrated Defence Command (IDS). A meeting was hosted by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat with the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, the Vice Cheifs of Army, Navy and the Air Force, Officials from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Finance for discussing the plans to create four theatre Commands.
The four theatre commands would be commanded by a three-star commander (Lieutenant General) to present amalgamated plans to the Cheifs of Staff Committee (CoSC). Currently, the single plan service is transpired out as inefficient and could not make the best and possible use of resources available. The re-organization would not get involved in any financial encumbrance and hence, only integration of headquarters would get happened. According to the statement by an official, “It is only reorganizing ourselves in a better manner within existing resources”.
These four commands are going to be named Air Defence Command, Integrated Eastern Theatre Command, Integrated Western Theatre Command and Maritime Theatre Command. Though, the planning of Maritime Theatre command is said to behold for getting a commander. These Theatre Commands are likely to be re-organized by the end of the year. At the same time, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has questioned regarding the naming of theatre commands and rather put a proposal for keeping these commands in rotation while the Indian Army and the Indian Navy have already given their consent for the formation of Theatre Commands with no objections so far.
However, the creation of these Theatre Commands would be the biggest re-organization of Indian Armed Forces. It is also expected that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi would make an official announcement regarding the formation of commands.
