Airbus delivers 3rd C295 transport aircraft to IAF

Airbus Defence and Space has delivered the third C295W transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in a steady progression of the landmark contract signed in September 2021. This delivery marks another step forward in modernizing the IAF’s mid-sized transport fleet.

The C295W, known for its versatility and tactical prowess, is replacing the IAF’s aging Avro-748 fleet. This new aircraft boasts modern technology and superior capabilities for transporting troops and cargo, including paradropping functionalities.

The contract between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Airbus entails the procurement of 56 C295Ws. The first 16 will be delivered in flyaway condition from Airbus’ final assembly line in Seville, Spain. The remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured in India under the “Make in India” initiative, with Tata Advanced Systems setting up a final assembly line (FAL) in Vadodara, Gujarat.

This project signifies a significant boost to India’s indigenous aerospace sector. The Vadodara FAL is expected to be operational by November 2024, and the first Indian-made C295 is scheduled to roll out in September 2026. The project is expected to be completed by August 2031 with the delivery of the 40th aircraft.

The continued deliveries of the C295W underscore the strengthening partnership between Airbus and India. This project not only equips the IAF with a modern and capable transport fleet but also fosters technological advancements and growth in the Indian aerospace industry.
