HSL completes INS Sindhukirti refit 4 months before promised delivery time

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) achieved a significant milestone on 15th June 2024 with the successful undocking of the Indian Navy’s INS Sindhukirti submarine. This accomplishment, ahead of schedule, highlights HSL’s growing capabilities and strengthens their position for future submarine projects under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The INS Sindhukirti, a Russian-built Kilo-class diesel-electric submarine, entered dry dock in January 2023 for a normal refit. This refit was to take approximately 22 months. However, HSL managed to complete the project in a shorter timeframe, demonstrating their efficiency and expertise.

This achievement is particularly noteworthy due to the “various challenges” encountered during the project, though the exact nature of these challenges remains undisclosed. Overcoming these hurdles underscores HSL’s commitment to excellence and their ability to deliver complex projects effectively.

The successful refit of INS Sindhukirti not only bolsters the Indian Navy’s underwater defense capabilities but also serves as a testament to India’s growing prowess in the field of shipbuilding and submarine maintenance. This accomplishment paves the way for HSL to become a key player in future endeavors under the ‘Make in India’ program, promoting self-reliance in the country’s defense sector.
